Investment casting is also known as lost was casting that is an industrial process which is one of the older metal forming techniques. It is a process that has been carried out for the 5,000 years, this was when beeswax formed the pattern to today’s high technology waxes, which refractory materials and specialist alloys, the cast will allows the production of the components with accuracy, versatility, repeatability and integrity in the different types of high performance alloys and metals. The modern form of this type of casting is now known as lost form casting which eliminates a few of the processes that were previously carried out. This process is normally used for smaller types of castings but can also be used to produce complete aircraft frames, steel castings up to 300kg and aluminium castings up to 30 kg. This is normally a more expensive unit than die and sand casting but does have the advantage of lower equipment costs. It also has the capability to produce more complicated shapes that are too different to produce and even impossible with die casting, however after this process it will require further work such as surface finishing and minor machining.
